National Junior Honor Society

About NJHS:

Our local chapter of NJHS is a very active group. Students who are members of NJHS participate in many activities that are exclusive to this group. These activities include our annual lock-in and field trip. NJHS members also take an active part in serving our school and community. These students are responsible for the trash pick-up along North Elmont, our school recycling program, the Safety Patrol at the Primary School and sponsoring the annual semi-formal dance at SMS.

Membership in NJHS:

Membership in National Junior Honor Society is an honor bestowed upon students who uphold the pillars of the Society: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character, and Citizenship.

The review process for potential National Junior Honor Society members begins after the first grading term of each year. Seventh and Eighth grade students who are among the top 10%-12% of academically performing students in their grade level will be considered for membership. Academic records from the previous school year and the first grading term of the current school year will be considered to determine eligibility. Discipline referrals, bus tickets, unacceptable behavior, and/or poor Citizenship grades may result in a student being ineligible. For more detailed information, see the Eligibility Requirements.

For the 2011-12 school year, a total of about 20 new students were invited to apply for membership in NJHS. These students met all of the following conditions:

  • 7th Graders - Achieved at least a 3.8 cumulative GPA in 2010-11
  • 8th Graders - Achieved a 4.0 cumulative GPA in 2010-11
  • Maintained at least a 3.5 GPA for Term 1 of 2011-12
  • Had no serious discipline referrals last year or this year
  • Had no more than one Needs Improvement/Unsatisfactory Citizenship grade for Term 1 of 2011-12
